PROMOTED sides Burbage and Biddestone both lost their opening fixtures in Division One, but in widely differing manners.
Burbage entertained Calne and collapsed to their lowest ever league score of just 44 all out.
Only Paul Lavis managed double figures for Burbage before becoming the first of Chris Downham's six victims. Downham clean bowled the next five, conceding just four run in the process, as Burbage crashed to 44 all out.
Two wickets apiece for Wiltshire under 15s bowler Dan Knight and Francis Key completed the demolition. Calne comfortable reached their target, with James Gladding making 22.
At Potterne the runs flowed as the home side racked up 300-4, thanks to an unbroken fifth wicket stand of 200 between Sam Gaiger, a fine 170 not out, and Phil Oliver, 34 not out and aided by 60 extras, with the last six overs producing 109 runs.
In reply Biddestone also scored well with Alan Hunt making 87 not out and Alan Low 36, but they could never quite match the asking rate, closing on 233-6.
Box began their campaign at home to Beanacre who they bowled out for 63, with Richard Foley finishing with figures of 4-9 and Dave Crawford 4-34. Dave Gilbert made a stubborn 22 not out. Foley, 35 not out, and Andrew Davis, 28 not out, then saw Box home without loss.
Westinghouse visited Nalgo and with Paul Bailey top scoring with 46 totalled 168-9. John Cleverley responded with 6-9 in a mean ten overs as Nalgo subsided to 68 all out.
Bath Civil Service scored 175-7 at home to Buscot Park, with Richard Carlin 49 and Chris Addey 38 the major contributors and Mark Heasman taking 3-34 in 14 overs for Buscot. In reply, Buscot were bowled out for 103 with Garry Thomson top scoring with 36 as Simon Ellerman took 3-28 in nine overs.
Division Two
GREAT Bedwyn visited Minety and gained a five-wicket success.
Chris Blundy took 4-20 in 12 overs as, despite 48 from Jon Lutwiche, Minety were bowled out for 102. Bedwyn's win came with 10 overs to spare.
Swindon Civil Service travelled to Highworth and scored 194-7 before bowling their hosts out for 100.
Promoted Collingbourne and Nationwide House both started with victories.
Ben Doherty took 6-21 in 13.1 overs for Collingbourne as they bowled visiting Sutton Veny out for 81. Tom Edmunds, with 4-58, then set up a comfortable nine-wicket victory.
At Cooper-Avon Tyres a league best 138 from Mark Vincent of Nationwide set them on the way to 211-7). Steve Lewis then took 6-70 in 12.3 overs as despite Dave Lite's 60 and Darren Perrin's 41 Cooper-Avon were dismissed for 180 with three balls remaining.
Division Three
SPYE Park struggled for runs at home to Swindon 3rds, finally closing on 95-9 with a fighting 53 from Andy Ellis.
Mike Barratt took 3-20 in 15 overs and Dave Pike 4-9 in seven.
John Beal responded with a mean spell of 1-11 in 12 overs but 41 not out from Paul Rignall helped Swindon to a six-wicket win with 12 overs to spare.
Bathford entertained Dauntsey Gentlemen and despite the efforts of Andrew Murray (42) and Darryl Watts (22) were dismissed for 111 as Tom Baldwin took 6-30. Murray followed up with 3-19 in 9.2 overs but Gavin Walter's 38 saw Dauntsey home by five wickets.
Cherhill visited Moredon Royal Oak and were bowled out for 124, Al Welling (31) top scoring as John Barnes took 5-31 in his 15 overs. Moredon were then bowled out for 96 to lose by 28 runs.
At Wanborough, visiting Urchfont won a high-scoring encounter by four wickets. Nick Stacey (81) and Paul Sore (47) helped Wanborough to 207-9, with Alan Crouch bowling well to take 3-25 in 15 overs. Paul Slater (53) and Nicky Brooks (88) then helped Urchfont to their target with seven balls to spare.
Division Four
PROMOTED Heytesbury visited Westbury 3rds and came away with a five-wicket win.
Mildenhall visited promoted Corsham 3rds and scored 172-7 with Graham Giles making 71 and Terry Rogers taking 3-23 in seven overs. John Gale (67) and Pete Greenwood (41) then saw Corsham to a comfortable six-wicket victory.
A low scoring game at Bradford saw the home side bowled out for 78, with Paul Annetts, 3-14 in 11.3 overs, Steve Annetts, 3-26 in 14, and Dave Boucher, 2-19 in nine, sharing the wickets.
In responseLambourn crept home by one wicket with ten overs remaining.
Wroughton Wranglers won comfortably at Coates who they dismissed for 99 after totalling 175 all out.
Blunsdon entertained Ramsbury and bowled them out for 114 with Dave Russell making 56 not out and Darren Fisher taking 4-38. John Hancock (66 not out) then helped Blunsdon to an easy nine-wicket win.
Division Five
NEWCOMERS Avebury made an impressive start to their campaign as they raced to the day's highest score of 310-6, with Henry Fry making 101, Dominic Fry 75 and Greg Dicks 55. Robert Gator then took 3-12 in nine overs as visiting Chippenham 3rds were bowled out for 109.
United Churches reached 212-8, with Richard Tong (42) top scoring, before Neil Lang took 4-32 in 15 overs to help dismiss visiting Burbage 2nds for 171 with two balls left.
Promoted Lavington surprisingly crashed to 44 all out at home to Wilcot, with Roger Cope, 3-14 in 10 overs, and Omar Manon, 6-31 in 10.4, doing the damage. Wilcot went on to win by seven wickets.
Division Six
PROMOTED Lacock bowled visiting Goatacre 3rds out for just 46, with Neil Ballinger, 5-11 in 15 overs, and John Heath, 4-21 in six, doing the damage.
Lacock knocked the runs off in 12 overs for the loss of one wicket.
Litten Tree scored 189-6 thanks to largely to Colin Blake (102 not out) at home to Box 2nds. Julian Brown, 3-13 in five overs, and Mark Brown, 3-3 in 10 balls, then bowled Box out for their lowest ever league total, just 29 of which Richard Gray ended with 17 not out.
Cooper-Avon Tyres 2nds visited Calne 2nds and closed on 199-9. Barry Garland, with 3-30, was the pick of the Calne bowlers. Despite the efforts of David Shuker (32) and Dave Edwards (31), Calne were restricted to 151-9.
Biddestone 2nds had Devizes 3rds as visitors and with Peter Talbot (91) and Mat Unwin (25) scored 179-6. For Devizes Isaac Reynolds ended with 5-27 in eight overs. Robert Styles, 5-39 in 15 overs, and Mike Tasker, 2-15 in six, then helped bowl Devizes out for 110.
Division Seven
IN an early rearranged fixture, promoted Nationwide House 2nds entertained Dauntsey Gentlemen 2nds.
Fine bowling by Steve Lewis, 5-28 in 12.3 overs, and Chris Trewhella, 5-32 in 12, had the visitors in for an early tea as they slumped to 63 all out, only Bill Scotfield (22) offering much resistance. A quickfire 43 not out from Mark Tuton then saw Nationwide to an eight wicket victory in just 16 overs.
Nationwide followed this up with a comprehensive nine wicket win against Bradford Town 3rds. Bradford made a respectable 143 all out, with Vince Edwards top scoring with 69, as Andy Lewis took 5-36 in 12 overs. Ian Vardon (74 not out) and Mark Tuton (44 not out) then steered Nationwide home.
Wootton Bassett 3rds scored 249-3 at home to Bath Civil Service 2nds, who they restricted to 190-6 in reply.
All Cannings, on their debut in Division Seven, visited Beanacre 2nds and with Kevin Ryles taking 4-35 in 12.2 overs dismissed their hosts for 125, with Roy Veacock (46 not out) top scoring. Tom McMullen then chipped in with 3-41 in 12 overs but a steady 34 by Roy Sykes helped All Cannings to a four-wicket success with 12 overs in hand.
Division Eight
TWO early rearranged games saw Chippenham 4ths at newcomers Devizes 4ths and Collingbourne 2nds entertaining Warminster 4ths.
A strong Warminster side bowled Collingbourne out for 57, with Justin Shuttlewood taking 5-26 in nine overs and Alan Aylesbury 4-15 in 4.1. Graham Pritchard then hit a quick 30 not out to see Warminster to a seven-wicket win in just 13 overs.
At Devizes, visitors Chippenham rattled up their highest league total as they reached 272-6 thanks to John Jenkins (66, their first individual half century), Pete Hazlehurst (48) and Chris Day (30). Devizes in reply were bowled out for 126, with Steve Lever (69) top scoring. Joe Haines, 3-11, and Tom Bowler, 4-30, took the bulk of the wickets. This was a good game with a number of young players performing very creditably.
Cherhill 2nds gained a narrow two-run success against visitors Collingbourne 2nds. Cherhill made 80 all out, with Trevor Parsonage taking three for 14 in six overs and John Dandy 4-10 in seven. Then, despite the efforts of Ian Kie (35 not out), it was Steve Hutchison, with 3-30 in 13 overs, and Brian Andrews, 4-19 in 11, who swung the game to Cherhill as Collingbourne were bowled out for 78.
Club records tumbled at Beehive Bradford as they rattled up their highest league score of 273-6 against visiting Bathford 2nds, this thanks mainly to a first league ton from Micky Swan who hit a belligerent 158.
Brian Sutton bowled well for the visitors, taking 3-44 in his 15 overs. The visitors then scored 101-9 in reply, with Vince Hamley taking 3-20 in 11 overs.
Devizes 4ths crashed to 55 all out against visiting United Churches 2nds, with Chris Sharp doing the damage by taking 8-29 in 10 overs, including a hat-trick. Churches went on to an easy nine-wicket win.
