DESPITE chilly weather and overcast skies, hundreds of people flocked to Devizes Lions Club's annual May Day Fair on Monday May 6.
Following the usual tradition, the Lions had organised different of events throughout the town. At the Wharf there were dozens of stalls selling home produce, bric a brac and chances to win prizes while supporting local good causes.
St Peter's School PTA offered the chance to win a Manchester United shirt, signed by David Beckham, and donated by two parents, Rick and Tracey Hewitt.
The May Day Fair also offered a popular venue for the male majorettes, the Major Wrecks, to debut their new routines for the season.
It was a slick routine as they had already had a chance to perform at Trowbridge and at Safeway supermarket on Saturday.
The performance included a couple of old favourites including Hey Baby and New York, New York.
The antics of the men in tutus and pom-poms proved just as irresistible to the crowds as ever.
Also performing were the Devizes Old Boys' Band and a Punch and Judy show.
In the Market Place a makeshift stage hosted live bands like Marston-based Take This who reprised rock'n'roll hits.
There were also charity stalls and the usual collection of classic cars.
Crafts and antiques enthusiasts were also well catered for with fairs going on in the Shambles market hall and the Corn Exchange.
Doug Simpson, the president of the Lions Club of Devizes, said the number of people who attended the May fair was down and he put that down to the cool weather.
He said: "There was a drizzle first thing in the morning. It was also cool, but by the afternoon it warmed up and there was a good atmosphere.
The day raised £3,000 which will be distributed to local charities.
