RESIDENTS are calling for urgent improvements to a dangerous road junction after a serious accident on Tuesday which resulted in a Devizes mother being airlifted to hospital.

The 37-year-old woman who has not been named, was taking her two children to school when the accident happened at the junction of Nursteed Close and Brickley Lane.

The mother, who lives in Elm Tree Gardens, was attempting to turn out of Nursteed Close when the accident occurred.

Her silver Renault Megane was struck on its offside by a green Land Rover which was travelling along Brickley Lane towards Devizes.

The woman's two children were uninjured, but shocked.

Workmen building houses on the new housing development to the east of Brickley Lane went to help the injured woman, and they stayed with her until paramedics arrived.

The woman's boyfriend also arrived after he was told of the accident.

Paramedics called the Wiltshire Air Ambulance, which landed on the building site, and the woman was flown to Bath's Royal United Hospital.

Her children were taken by road ambulance to the RUH to be with her.

The driver of the Land Rover, a 46-year-old man from Westbury, was uninjured but shocked.

The woman, who is a receptionist for Macqueen Veterinary Centre in Devizes, was first thought to have suffered serious injuries, but in fact sustained cuts and bruises and was due to be discharged yesterday as the Gazette went to press.

Part of Brickley Lane was closed for three and a half hours and diversions set up as police officers carried out investigations into the collision.

PC Steve Bussey of Salisbury traffic department said: "The lady was taking her children to school, and although the children were not injured they were upset and shocked by what happened."

PC Bussey said police wanted to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time of the collision which happened at about 8.30am.

He said: "It would have been busy at that time with parents taking their children to school. We would like anyone who was there to call us on (01380) 735004."

Residents in Nursteed Close and Elm Tree Gardens say the junction on to Brickley Lane from Nursteed Close is dangerous and many drivers avoid using it.

A woman said: "I was driving my children to school on Tuesday morning and it could have been me that was injured.

"The junction is lethal because as you look to the right down Brickley Lane it is a blind bend. It is safer to drive though Elm Tree Gardens and get on to Brickley Lane further up."

Sarah Hyde, who lives in Nursteed Close, said she and her husband, Matthew, avoid using the Nursteed Close junction on to Brickley Lane.

She said: "It's difficult to see right and motorists come up there very quickly. We have thought for some time that there could be a serious accident at the junction."

She said traffic had increased in Brickley Lane because of new houses being built nearby and feared that more accidents could happen.

A new road is being built to link Windsor Drive with Nursteed Road but no date has been set for its opening.

A county council spokesman said when the new road opened, the section of Brickley Lane from Nursteed Close to Nursteed Road could be downgraded to a cycle way and pedestrian link.
