WORK on the Fisherton Street enhancement scheme in Salisbury is to be reassessed, following last week's burst water main and gas leak.
In a bid to limit any further disruption, trial holes will be dug to establish the exact location of services, and additional resources might be brought in to speed up work on re-laying the pavement.
Contractor Ringway Park-man accidentally damaged the water main as workers were removing a thick layer of reinforced concrete from the pavement along Bridge Street last Tuesday.
Just two days earlier, Fisherton Street had been closed following reports of a gas leak.
All service utilities are generally buried at a depth of 900mm from the road surface, but workmen were just 300mm from the surface when they found the pipe.
David Thomas, principal traffic engineer, said: "Working conditions on Fisherton Street have been very difficult. Because it is such an old street, the utility people can't tell us accurately what's in the ground.
