I CAN only assume D Harvey's regular use of the road leading to the Safeway roundabout in Chippenham is at a time of the day other than 8.30am to 9.30am and 5.30pm to 6.30pm.(Letters, May 2)
He would otherwise have encountered some of the "death wish" drivers who, coming down the dual carriageway to the golf course, stay in the outside lane over the hatched section and force their way in to gain a couple of cars' lengths advantage.
Alternatively, there are those who ignore the "no right turn" to get into the golf course.
Then there are the numerous minor accidents which have occurred between the Plough turn and golf course caused by arrogant, impatient drivers or those pulling away from two lanes on the Esso island to get into one down to Safeways.
As long as two lanes are forced to merge into one at these points, there will be problems, with the resultant consequences of road rage, frustration and accidents.
In respect of the environmental issue as D Harvey points out, it is perilously close to the buffer zone, in other words, not encroaching on the buffer zone and therefore acceptable.
Having just returned from the USA, where I drove daily, I must say we could learn a lot about road construction and layout to ensure smooth flowing traffic.
Not once in two weeks there did I encounter a traffic jam.
