As the councillor for Freshbrook and Grange Park, elected last Thursday, I would like to say that I couldn't agree with Mr Bristow more (Letters, May 7). We need more people to get out there and vote. But I must comment on his criticisms of the Lib Dems.
As Liberal Democrats we tried to work with the Tories on the budget in 2001, and offered to form a joint administration after the vote of no confidence last year. Alas, the Tories lacked the vision to take us up, instead joining with Labour to produce scurrilous press releases against us. Hardly sitting on the fence! In fact I suspect it will be the Tories sitting on the fence come the election of the new council administration next week.
I am also sorry that the gentleman doesn't like the Lib Dem Focus leaflets. We publish them at our own expense, and deliver them in our own time, to keep the residents of our ward informed of progress on matters of interest. If he has a better suggestion perhaps he would care to share it with us.
Finally, I would like to thank the voters of Freshbrook and Grange Park for electing me. I only hope I can live up to, and exceed, your expectations.
