WESTBURY United were crushed under the Taunton Town promotion bandwagon on Monday afternoon as the Somerset side moved three points closer to Dr Martens League football next term.

The visitors, who knew before kick off that they would finish bottom of the Screwfix Direct League, conceded an early goal and were rarely in contention against their high-flying hosts.

Westbury United manager Derek Graham felt his side had done well in difficult circumstances at Wordsworth Drive.

He said: "We did alright. Unfortunately they scored early on and it was always a bit of a battle from then on.

"We couldn't get out of our own half in the first five minutes and they forced three corners.

"We did manage to come into it a bit after that and they applauded us off at the end."

Following their three home wins, United travelled to promotion chasing Taunton full of confidence and gave a resolute defensive display.

Mark Batters was again in tremendous form in goal and during the match he made several outstanding saves.

Dan Dominy, James Dowd and Allan Clarke performed very well with Dominy making a goal line clearance. Matt Burton also cleared off the line late in the game.

Taunton flew out of the blocks and Ellis Laight opened the scoring in the third minute when he tapped home following a goalmouth scramble. Laight scored his second on 24 minutes when his flick from a corner beat Batters.

In the second half Peter Knox completed the scoring with an easy finish when United were slow to react to a quick free kick.
