THEY may not be the best footballers in the world, but the lads from Holt certainly know how to celebrate.

Only 24 hours after Arsenal lifted the FA Cup at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, the Holt team were celebrating their own modest success in winning the Division Four title of the Vanitec Computers-sponsored Chippenham Sunday League.

And in the best traditions of cup winners, they celebrated by touring their home patch to show off their trophy to their supporters.

With no open-top bus available, they pressed captain Stuart Faint's scaffolding lorry, decked out in the club's green and yellow colours, into service for their tour.

Cheered on by their own Barmy Army of fans, Holt had crushed Bradstone Rovers 8-3 in their final game of the season.

Faint gave them the perfect start before goals from Tim Edgar (2), Dan Burton-Morgan (2), Jon Andrews, John White and Adam Pollit wrapped things up. In between Shaun Ward (2) and Garath Hadden scored for Bradstone.

It's been quite a first year for the Holt team, who have their base at the village's Old Ham Tree pub.

They have a regular support of between 60 and 70 and for big matches have attracted gates of over 200: attendances many Screwfix Direct League clubs would love to see coming through the turnstiles.

Ham Tree licensee Mike Smith said: "It's been a great first season and we've had a lot of fun.

"From day one we have had good support from the village and we've done all sorts of oddball stunts to keep people happy.

"When we knew we had won the title we decided to do something a bit special and decided to do a tour of the village.

"We told everybody we were going to get an open-top bus, but all along we knew it would be Stuart's scaffolding lorry.

"We decked the lorry out with big flags and bunting and after the tour we had a barbecue."

But even Mr Smith was caught out by his wife, Nancy, who joined in the spirit of the occasion by getting together a team of cheerleaders for the day.

"I knew something was going on because I was banned from certain rooms in the pub, but they took everybody by surprise when they came on dressed in their special T-shirts," Mr Smith said.

He added: "All the things we have done this season have been done a little bit tongue in cheek, but I hope people have enjoyed it as well.

"I would like to say a big thank you to Bradstone, who were our opponents on Sunday, for joining in the spirit of the thing."

Holt now take the summer off before beginning their campaign in Division Three in September.

And, warned Mr Smith: "We have a few new ideas up our sleeves for next season, but I'm not letting on what they are.

"You're going to have to wait and see."
