IT has taken Sarah Brinkworth eight years to graduate from Marlborough carnival princess to queen, but the 18-year-old former St John's School pupil fulfilled her dream on Saturday.

Sarah, of Homefields, in Marlborough, won the selection contest at Marlborough Town Football Club and will lead the procession in September. With her will be her attendant, Emma Vyze, also 18, from Great Bedwyn, who was also selected on Saturday night.

Sarah, who works at Waitrose in the High Street, said: "I am very pleased to have won and I am looking forward to a very busy but very enjoyable summer."

Sarah, the fourth of eight sisters, became carnival princess in 1994 while a pupil at St John's lower school.

As part of her latest prize, Sarah was presented with a bouquet. She will also receive a cheque for £50 and her dress for the carnival will be provided by Monsoon in Marlborough High Street.

Carnival organiser Angela Dickens was delighted. She said: "It was a most enjoyable evening."

A carnival car boot sale in Waitrose's car park on Monday, attracted 65 boot entries and made £1,000 for local charities.
