NEW 'Village Only' signs to redirect heavy goods vehicles away from Ashton Keynes and help ease traffic problems are to be erected along two main routes into the village.

Ashton Keynes Parish Council has been in discussion with Wiltshire County Council to erect a sign at the top of Cox's Hill at the North End crossroads along the B4696.

A second sign may also be put up further along the main road heading into the village from Leigh.

Les Banner of Ashton Keynes Parish Council said: "We have found that many large vehicles are using the narrow village streets as a rat-run to Cricklade or Swindon.

"These new signs, when erected, will hopefully stop large vehicles driving through Ashton Keynes and help ease traffic congestion in the village itself.

"All too often large vehicles are also ignoring or failing to see there is a 7.5 tonne weight limit through the village.

"Or sometimes lorries get lost in the village trying to find the main roads into Swindon and industrial and business premises in the North Wiltshire area so we hope that by erecting 'Village Only' signs lorries will stick to the main roads."
