TOWN'S hopes of cashing in on Portsmouth transfer target Sol Davis have been scuppered after the south-coast club denied any interest in the player.

The Division 1 outfit, courted Davis last season, have dismissed rumours they are about to table a £400,000 bid for the Town defender.

Portsmouth Chief Executive Peter Storrie acted swiftly to end speculation saying on the club's official website: "I can categorically state that we have not made a bid of any kind for this player.

"This really is the silly season and it does nobody any good to continually be linked with all these players without any substance whatsoever."

Davis' future looks certain to be away from the County Ground after the 22-year-old rejected Town's offer of an extension on his contract two weeks ago.

Because Davis is under 24, Town are guaranteed a fee for the player but as yet no recent approach has been made for the Cheltenham-born defender.

And, with the club's current financial state Town will want to get as much as they can for Davis and avoid any such transfer going to a tribunal.

Davis, who has made more than 120 Town appearances, insists that he would love to stay at the County Ground, but talks with King have reached a stalemate.

"I don't want to leave the club," said Davis.

"But he (King) has said that it's his final offer and that's that. I've not spoken to him since then.

"I've not heard from any clubs that might be interested I'll just have to wait and see what happens."
