MAY I, through the media of your newspaper, say: 'Ladies, bin that handbag'.

Every day we hear and read of handbag snatching and mugging, especially of senior citizens. Only a few weeks ago we read of one dear elderly lady who was mugged for her fish supper and later died.

It is a sad world to feel one cannot leave home without feeling apprehensive for safety and freedom.

But ladies, why do you need that handbag? Have a good look and see what you have in yours.

I haven't used a handbag for some years. My outer garments have deep pockets with zips and anyone wanting to frisk my coat would get a swift kick and a jab in their eye.

Soon some sub post offices will be gone and those with pension books will have longer journeys to make.

For goodness sake, open a bank account. Bank managers are there to give good advice, and you can get a credit card which means there is no need to carry a large sum of money.

Another good asset is a bumbag. No, I'm not being rude. Ask your daughter or granddaughter and they will explain. On a day out, I can accommodate a vast amount in mine, even my spectacles and case.

Perhaps parents will be good enough to get their youngsters to read this. I don't tar all our youngsters with the same brush.

I know most of you are caring, feeling people. How would you feel if it was your nan or gramps that was beaten senseless for a pittance? Makes you feel sick doesn't it. But it could happen. And to the minority who couldn't care less your turn will come.

Incidentally I am a mother, grandmother and great grandmother.

I do hope I have given food for thought.
