BATH are expected to unveil their new director of rugby within a matter of days but their no 1 target appears to have ruled himself out of contention.

Team director Michael Foley hinted yesterday that an announcement on the new club supremo was imminent, possibly as early as this week.

But Leeds Tykes' chief Phil Davies has apparently ruled himself out of the running, turning down a four-year contract in favour of remaining in Yorkshire.

Bath's short-list for the job definitely includes one overseas candidate, with speculation linking them to former Italy coach Brad Johnstone.

But former England chief Geoff Cooke, currently with National League side Worcester, could be another to fit the bill.

Foley yesterday reiterated his belief that the new man would be an experienced head. And he also refused to speculate further on new arrivals on the playing roster.

French prop Franck Tournaire is believed to be close to completing his switch from Toulouse. Countrymen Stephane Glas, of Bourgoin, front rower Sylvain Marconnet and back row Araud Costes are also rumoured to be possible recruits from across the English Channel.

However, after seeing his side edged out 24-22 at home to Wasps on yesterday's final Premiership weekend, Foley said: "This is not the time to be talking about who is coming in, although we are working on securing the players we want.

"I am looking to strengthen the squad, although no-one from the present team wants to leave."
