MALMESBURY Mayor John Bowen is launching an appeal for a new mayoral chain carrying the town's coat of arms.
The chain, worn by the mayor when he is not in robes, still carries the badge of The Warden and Freemen of Malmesbury rather than the town's coat of arms, which Malmesbury has had for 52 years.
The coat of arms bears a red and white shield, with the cross of King Athelstan, as well as the resolution of St Aldhelm's.
Coun Bowen said he hopes enough money can be raised to inscribe the new chain by the end of his second term, next May.
In Queen Victoria's diamond jubilee year in 1897, the mayoral chain was given to the town by the mayor.
Coun Bowen said he is a keen to do something of a similar nature to mark Queen Elizabeth's golden jubilee.
He said the job of making the chain is out to tender.
Coun Bowen was elected to Malmesbury Town Council three years ago and has now been asked to complete a second term.
At the town hall on Tuesday, he was sworn in for the second term, with Coun Charles Vernon taking on the role of deputy mayor.
