CAPTAIN Duncan Potts and about 40 crew members of HMS Marlborough enjoyed a sporting challenge last Wednesday when they visited the town which bears the name of their Royal Navy frigate.
They took up a number of challenges from the town's sporting clubs while their ship is docked in Portsmouth for a re-fit. The visit was hosted by Mayor David Watson.
This was the crew's last trip to the town before the Marlborough, a heavily-armed type 23 frigate, undertakes sea trials.
Capt Potts, 40, who has commanded the Marlborough for two years, expressed regret that he and his crew would be at sea during the town's jubilee celebrations on June 3.
But the sailors made the most of their visit, taking part in a three-way match at the golf club against the towncouncil and club itself, and finishing third.
They fared no better when they played soccer against Marlborough Town, losing 9-1 and having to return the trophy which they won on their last sporting visit to the town.
The ship's crew was all at sea in a 20 overs match against Marlborough Cricket Club as well.
But spirits remained high even when their drubbing was completed in a three-way skittles match in the evening at the football club in Elcot Lane.
Capt Potts will be visiting Marlborough again on Monday for the traditional Mayor making ceremony.
