MARLBOROUGH Town Council has given its approval in principle to a £29,300 sculpture to celebrate the town's 800th anniversary in 2004.

Designed by internationally renowned artist Maggie Hambling, the sculpture, a model of which was shown to councillors on Tuesday evening by Nick Fogg, a member of the 2004 Committee, depicts the sun and moon. It is hoped it will be erected on the grass beside the steps to St Mary's Church in New Road, almost opposite The Parade.

The sun will be a polished stainless steel disc about seven feet across while the moon will be bronze and seven feet high.

Although the cost has been estimated at £29,300, Mr Fogg said grants were available from a number of different bodies and the artwork should not cost townspeople anything.

Coun Graham Francis, chairman of the 2004 committee, said they were delighted by Miss Hambling's design which was not meant to be representational.

Miss Hambling is particularly well known for her painting of jazz singer George Melly in the National Portrait Gallery.

She also created a sculpture of Oscar Wilde near Piccadilly Circus.
