RAPE TRIAL: ELEVEN witnesses saw a car similar to that owned by Anthony Joyce near the home of the 74-year-old rape victim.

At Bristol Crown Court on Monday, the jury heard statements which the prosecution alleged could place Joyce at the scene on June 4, 1999.

In evidence, Joyce admitted that he owned a white Ford Sierra car but denied that he was near the victim's home that day.

David Bate, QC for the defence, said: "There must be many such cars because, as we know, Fords are very popular."

One witness said that at about 1.30pm, shortly before the offence took place, she saw a car parked on a road near the home of the two women and was able to identify the exact make.

She said: "It was a white Ford Sierra Sapphire. I'm quite good with vehicles and I'm certain."

Police interviewed and took DNA swabs from owners of this make of car, including Joyce.

Mr Bate said whoever committed the crime was forensically aware and the person used gloves and planted hair at the scene.
