INSPECTORS have praised Box Primary School for its teaching and its pupils' progress.

Ofsted inspectors said they found well-behaved, happy pupils with a positive attitude to work.

The team also said teaching standards at the school were good.

Their report praised headteacher Steve Mynard, who has been at the school for a year, saying: "The headteacher, in his first year, has formulated a clear vision for its future development, whilst maintaining standards and managing staff changes satisfactorily."

The inspectors said test results in year six were well above average in English, and above average in maths and science.

The report said the school had good links with parents and governors.

It said: "The school works in very close partnership with parents, who make a very good contribution to children's learning at home and in school.

"The governing body is playing a more active role in monitoring the work of the school."

Mr Mynard said: "The report matches precisely my own findings during my first year at Box.

"The children here are well taught, they are well supported and they generally achieve well."

He said there were issues that needed to be addressed including improving the teaching of writing skills.

He said: "Last year every single child who left this school met or exceeded the expected level in reading.

"We need to improve the teaching of writing skills so that the children's ability in this important area can rise. We also need to ensure that our most able children are sufficiently challenged.

"This report shows that we are a good school."

The governing body is working on an action plan to continue improvements.
