A baby that is 6ft 2in tall has been born in Wiltshire.

The newborn, Shakula which means 'food' in Afrikaans arrived at the beginning of May and is the first giraffe to be born at Longleat Safari Park this year.

The female giraffe is the eighth calf to be born to veteran mum Jolly, who gave birth standing up, leaving a 6ft drop for her latest offspring.

Mother and child are reported to be doing well by staff at the safari park, which is operating a breeding programme for the animals.

Shakula is expected to reach a height in excess of 15ft during her lifetime, which may be more than 20 years.

Senior warden, Sascha Hann, said: "We're delighted with the progress they're both making.

"We put the mother and baby together in their own private enclosure for a couple of days and we have now let her into the park with her new extended family."
