D Room writes: "I am so frustrated by the fantastic potential that Swindon possesses, but fails to realise on every occasion." (Evening Advertiser letters, May 14). How right he is.

As the number of pubs and clubs proliferate, in the very area where he laments the lack of cultural attractions lies a sleeping giant.

It has the potential to provide live performances (theatre, music, lectures, recitals), cinema entertainment, a quality restaurant and a meeting place at the heart of Swindon's town centre.

Indeed, it could also provide the accommodation to host a variety of community groups, which would rebuild a sense of belonging and pride.

Where is this colossus? Lying derelict in Emlyn Square.

Following the recent English Heritage sponsored survey of the Mechanics Institute it is obvious is that this Grade II* listed building requires immediate urgent work to prevent further deterioration.

To fail to do this work is tantamount to vandalism of what is a nationally important building.

For Swindon town centre, it is not necessarily the building that is important it's the potential we are missing that needs to be addressed.

Whilst it does not own the building, Swindon Council as the local planning authority is the only local body that can force the owner to undertake this urgent work.

In my opinion, it should do so without further delay.

And if the owner doesn't want to play ball?

He should be encouraged to sell up to someone who will.
