WILTSHIRE failed in their bid to lift the Southern Counties title when they were soundly beaten by South East champions Hampshire at Melksham Town.
Mel Gingell's team, crowned South West Counties champions last month, missed top scorer Gary Banks and Forest Green Rovers midfielder Danny Allen. Goalkeeper Jason Grubb also struggled with a back injury throughout the clash, in which Wiltshire's consolation came from a Kevin Banks spot kick.
Wiltshire boss Mel Gingell said: "The lads left their most disappointing performance until last. Hampshire were better on the day and I can't have any complaints. Our lads under-achieved and, although the lads that came in gave 100 per cent, they weren't physically strong enough and lacked that bit of quality."
Although the manager was disappointed at Wednesday night's showing, he has been pleased with the strides made by the team this term.
He said: "The Wiltshire FA have said the youth team have put the county on the map again and that is nice to hear."
