MANY years ago Hilperton WI started a Village Scrap Book, a fascinating record of village history, which has been kept up to date ever since with photos, articles, diaries, etc. We are now on the third book.
The first volume was placed into the County Record Office for safe keeping, where it is available for us to go and refer to whenever we wish.
We assumed, not unreasonably, that the County Record Office would be kept with the Wiltshire county offices in Wiltshire's county town of Trowbridge, a place easily accessible by train, bus or car from most parts of the county. We would certainly not wish to see it moved to Chippenham or Swindon!
What is this 'the vital acceptability of Chippenham to Swindon' (Cllr Scott's words)? Why is 'acceptable to Swindon' more important than being acceptable to Trowbridge or Salisbury?
Why go to the vast expense (I presume using Wiltshire County taxpayers' money) to buy a site elsewhere and move the Record Office, when it has functioned in Trowbridge so well for so long there seems to be absolutely no reason for moving it to Chippenham.
I feel there is much to be said for the old adage 'if it ain't broke, don't mend it'.
