A TEENAGER with learning difficulties failed to stop for police because he was obeying his parents' instructions to take his car straight to a garage.

Keelan Shanley, 19, of Hammond Way, Trowbridge, admitted failing to stop when required to by the police.

Michelle Hewitt, prosecuting, said that police officers in the Upper Broad Street area of the town noticed Shanley's car had a smashed tail light.

When they turned on their blue lights, requiring him to stop, Shanley failed to do so straight away.

When he eventually pulled over he got out of the car and shouted abuse before turning around and walking off.

Esther Bisgrove, defending, said that Shanley has attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder and learning difficulties and had attended a special school.

She said: "He was taking his car to be repaired at a local garage.

"He had been instructed by his parents that he would have to be very careful when he drove the car to the garage because it had an oil leak.

"They said that if he stopped to talk to anyone on the way he might not make it to the garage."

She said that the young man had been stopped by the police on many occasions since beginning to drive but had never before had to appear in court as a result of it and, on this occasion, had lost his temper.

She said: "At school he was given teaching to control his temper. He was told not to confront people and to walk away.

"As we have heard he walked away from the police on this occasion."

Shanley was fined £50 and ordered to pay £35 costs.
