THE MESSAGE breast is best has been hammered home to mothers across the county this week.
Midwives from Trowbridge hospital set up shop in the Shires on Wednesday as they dished out advice on the benefits of breast over bottle feeding as part of breastfeeding awareness week.
Midwifery clinical manager at Trowbridge hospital, Belinda Dhanowa, said: "We need to be getting the message across to mothers that breast feeding is better for both mother and baby."
Midwives from Chippenham were also delivering the message at Chippenham College this week.
Sally Hedstone and Julie Haig delivered a session on the benefits of breastfeeding to a group of childcare students.
Joining in with the sessions were members of a newly formed peer group of breastfeeding mums.
Mrs Hedstone said: "We have found while healthcare professionals are really important in providing advice and help, new mums often prefer to talk to people who are in the same situation, it breaks down the barriers of communications and often provides a really good support network."
Breastfeeding rates in the UK are among the lowest in Europe, particularly among mothers who are in the highest income bracket.
Mrs Hedstone said: "We want to get over the message that breast really is best. It's convenient and you can do it anytime, anyplace, anywhere. It is the healthiest option for both mother and baby."
A report into breastfeeding has revealed that babies who are breastfed have a lower risk of gastroenteritis, eczema and childhood diabetes.
Benefits for mothers include a lower risk of pre-menopausal breast cancer and hip fractures. It also helps them to get back into shape more quickly.
