BOX-BASED rock star Peter Gabriel has married for the second time. The chart-topping singer married his Irish girlfriend Meabh Flynn on the Italian island of Sardinia on Sunday.

The private ceremony took place in the park of the Li Capanni hotel that the guitarist and singer bought last year.

After the couple exchanged vows, Mr Gabriel released two doves.

His best man was ex-Genesis colleague and long-standing friend, Phil Collins.

Mr Gabriel is an intensely private man and tight security kept fans and onlookers away from the hotel.

Box villagers have sent their famous neighbour messages of congratulations.

Resident Tudor Jones, who has met the singer, said: "We wish him and his new wife happiness and hope he enjoys his newly-married life here in Box.

"It's safe to say that people here are pleased and proud that he is part of our community.

"His is a very private man but he does play a major role behind the scenes in the village, and he is very supportive of Box."

Mr Gabriel, who is 53, has a one-year-old son with his new wife.

He also has two grown up daughters, Melanie and Anna, by his first wife Jill.

The star, who lives at Drewett Mill, was seen just days before his wedding at Bristol's Colston Hall for a show by Genesis tribute band The Musical Box.

The singer, now sporting a long, greying goatee beard, mingled with fans during the concert.

Before settling down with his new wife he was linked to a number of famous women including American actress Rosanna Arquette. He also had an on-off relationship with controversial Irish singer Sinead O'Connor.

Gabriel guards his privacy and has lived without fuss in Box for years.

In the mid-80s he brought glamour and celebrities to the north Wiltshire village when he opened his Real World Studios in a former mill.

He paid for a footpath close to the studio to be re-routed after bands in the recording rooms complained about being spied on by groups of fans congregating on it.

He created the WOMAD (World of Music and Dance) festival in the 1980s which nearly bankrupted him.

A one-off reunion concert with Genesis at Milton Keynes Bowl saved him from financial ruin.
