PLANS for a controversial new three-storey office block on the outskirts of Chippenham were set to get the go-ahead, despite fears it could spoil the appearance of historic Corsham Park.

Members of North Wiltshire District Council's area development control committee were due to consider the application, for which officers had recommended approval.

The new offices, which would employ nearly 250 people, would be built at the new Turnpike Business Park. Outline permission was granted in 1999.

Fleet Services is one of the companies that has recently gained planning permission on the business park.

The new proposal is for a site closest to the Chippenham western bypass, and the office block would be a modern building of brick, metal and glass .

But Corsham Town Council has objected because members are worried the large building could have a serious impact on Corsham Park.

Planning officers agreed the office block would be prominent, despite all the trees in the area.

"It is considered the building will be a defining landmark on the edge of the town as defined by the bypass and it is not unattractive in its own right," reported case officer Lachlan Robertson.
