TWO teams of young Swindon chess players travelled in opposite directions to achieve impressive results.
Wiltshire under-14 girls team made up of girls from three Swindon schools produced their best result when they were runners-up in the national finals of the English Girls County Championships in Abingdon.
Nicola Thomas, 12, won an outstanding three games out of three on top board, and Rachel Fitch, 14, from Commonweal School, also scored 100 per cent on fifth board.
Kirsty Lafferty and Nicola's twin sister Sarah, both of Ridgeway School, Sarah Fitch, 12, and Lawn's Shivani Jobanputra, 11, made up the six-girl team.
In North Wales, meanwhile, Commonweal School's under-14 team earned a Silver award when they came fourth in the first national competition for under-12, under-14, and under-16 teams, held at Prestatyn.
