SWINDON businesses are being warned by trading standards officers to be on their guard against conmen trying to charge over £200 for advertising that has not been ordered.
Two businesses and organisations have contacted officers complaining that they were potential victims.
In both cases a phone call came from out of the blue in which the caller referred to a drug awareness booklet aimed at schools.
In one case the anonymous caller tried to demand payment for the booklet, claiming that an order had already been placed.
When it was argued that nothing had been ordered, the caller hung up.
Environmental services group leader Robert Taylour advised businesses not to rush into paying for something they do not believe was ordered and to treat any unsolicited phone call with suspicion.
Businesses should also be wary about confirming details over the phone.
