ROADWORKS which have been carried out at Chippenham's Bridge Centre roundabout for the past six months have finally come to an end.

New traffic lights were installed at the weekend, ending the work which has at times caused traffic to queue up Bath Road and past the hospital.

The previous lights were worn out and often caused chaos during the rush hour.

The £150,000 project to improve traffic flow and safety at the roundabout was contracted out to Ringway Parkman and Serco.

Wiltshire County Council's highway authority has said the improvements should bring benefits to drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.

A county council spokesman said: "There has been a lot going on. We thought if we were going to work there we should do several things at the same time while we were at it.

"We have improved cycling access around the roundabout and pedestrian access into the Bridge Centre."

She said: "We have also put in a brand new set of signals and traffic lights. The old ones were very old and were often breaking down."

The spokesman said a lot of the work was scheduled to happen overnight and at weekends to minimise disruption but it could not be avoided altogether on such a busy roundabout.

"We have done three things at once, and although it has taken some time, we hope people will appreciate the improvements, both drivers, cyclists and pedestrians," she said.
