THOUSANDS of visitors marvelled at the Army's military might at Army 2002, held on Salisbury Plain at the weekend.

The event, featuring guns, tanks, and, for the first time, the Army's Apache attack helicopter, took place near Larkhill Barracks.

"This is the first time it's been seen at a public event and is very exciting for everyone," said a spokesman.

Army 2002 is one of the events replacing The Royal Tournament, which used to take place annually at Earl's Court.

The Royal Tournament's famous gun run still took place, and visitors were also treated to a parade of military vehicles, and firepower demonstrations.

Other attractions included small arms and clay target shooting. A total of 64 companies were also on display in the main arena.

The Royal Gloucestershire, Berkshire and Wiltshire Regiment ran an assault course over the weekend.

Sgt Major John Ledgister, 34, from Chippenham, part of the regimental recruiting team, said: "Everything is going well and we've had plenty of youngsters taking part."

On Friday 600 schoolchildren, as well as 200 cadets, visited the show.

Teacher Valerie Ringham, of Chamberlain Road, in Chippenham, was at the event with children from Somervale School in Midsomer Norton.

"The children are all having a good time, and they get an Army escort around," she said.
