MEMBERS of the public will be asked their opinions over the next few weeks and months on how Swindon Council spends its money.
The cabinet last night went out to consultation on a proposal to create a new 'strategic direction' for the council, with its priorities clearly stated.
It published proposals for how it might spend its money over the next three years and how much it might increase council tax, fees and charges.
Each council department education and community, social services, Swindon Services and environmental services has put forward potential areas of savings.
The move follows months of debate about the need for the council to focus more clearly on fewer priorities.
It now wants to engage the public in the debate and encourage people to say how they think their money should be spent.
The Labour group, which is leading the consultation as the administration, last night insisted the council's two top priorities remain the same: education first and social services second.
But deputy council leader Kevin Small (Lab, Western) also stated the group's wish to create a cleaner, safer environment for Swindon and to "unclog" the town's roads.
The group believes the council's aim should be to perform in the top 25 per cent of all councils in the country, for all service areas.
