THE rector of Wilton has slated the county council over its attitude towards education in south-west Wiltshire, where it proposes to scrap middle schools despite overwhelming support for them from parents and staff.
Decrying the creeping destruction of community life, Canon Bede Cooper has poured scorn on local government.
"We have seen recently what 'local' government means," he writes in the July issue of the parish newsletter.
"Government of the locals (or yokels) by those who know best in Salisbury and in Trowbridge. See what a difference it makes when local people petition to save their school. Nothing.
"The process of consultation is like a sop to the electorate, tossed to them by those who have already decided what is to be done."
Wilton resident Phil Matthews, an outspoken supporter of the threatened three-tier education system, publicly thanked Mr Cooper for his "excellent" letter at Wilton town council's July meeting.
