HAVING read the article by Ben Fitzgerald on Social Services in Swindon (EA, July 9) and can only say "What on earth is going on?"

To say that we, the taxpayers of Swindon, are being let down by certain people in the council (both officers and councillors) would be to state the obvious.

For the Social Services Inspectorate to return the action plan as unsatisfactory should be enough evidence to show that some people are not doing their job to a satisfactory level.

If your report is correct that the head of Social Services is taking a holiday over the period when the action plan is being revised, my question must be "Do you want to keep your job"? If the answer is yes, then forget the holiday and get on with producing an acceptable plan.

I think the first priority the inspectors urged the council to focus on was 'demonstrating leadership'.
