A DISTRICT nurse is the first president of the newly merged Swindon and West Swindon Lions Clubs.
Kate Kells joined Swindon Lions in 1997 and is only the second woman since it was formed in 1965 to hold its top office.
The 29-year-old received her chain of office from the Swindon club's outgoing president David Cummings at a lunch to mark the merger of the two clubs.
Spokesman John Hamilton said: "The clubs have already been working closely together for several months on joint projects."
Part of an international organisation with 40,000 clubs in 171 countries, they raise cash for local and national charities and provide practical service for needy groups.
"With our joint membership and resources we can now respond more readily to requests for help from the elderly, the disabled and less privileged in the central and west areas of the town," said Mr Hamilton.
Biggest joint event during the next few months will be the annual Lions fireworks spectacular on Saturday, November 2, at the Polo Ground in Marlborough Road.
The Lions meet at the Marriott Hotel in Pipers Way and would welcome new members. For information call Pete Kennewell on 01703 530659 or Kate Kells on Swindon 728350.
