A MAN who bit a policeman after going berserk in his ex-girlfriend's house has been warned he could face jail.

Joseph Ephgrave, of Toothill, picked up a TV and smashed it on the floor during a drunken rampage after rowing with his former partner of three years on June 28.

Magistrates were told that while the couple were living together the 24-year-old invited a drug addict friend to stay at his partner's house, but the 'guest' did not leave for six weeks.

Olive Catton, prosecuting, said Ephgrave smashed the TV, a hi-fi and vacuum cleaner after his partner asked him to arrange the removal of used needles left behind by his friend.

When the police arrived they followed Ephgrave to his home in Colchester Close and chased him after he ran out of the back door. Then, as he lashed out, he bit PC Simon Pope on the right bicep, breaking the skin, and continued to kick out.

Ephgrave, pleaded guilty to criminal damage and assaulting a policeman in the course of his duty. He also admitted breaching a one year conditional discharge imposed last September for possessing cannabis.

Tony Nowogrodzki, defending, said his client was apologetic and keen to pay compensation. Magistrates adjourned the case for pre-sentence reports but warned Ephgrave, who was bailed, that he could still face prison.
