ANDY KING was hoping for a below-par morning before perking up to try and slot the first two pieces of his summer jigsaw into place.

The Town boss put aside transfer issues for the morning as he teed off in the club's annual golf day but football was never far from his thoughts at the Wrag Barn course in Highworth.

Far from getting in some last-minute practice, King spent yesterday in talks with Bolton midfielder David Norris and the player's father, who acts as his advisor.

The 21-year-old spent a week with the Town squad in Southport but wanted further time to consider his options.

Although all the indications are that Norris enjoyed his Town 'taster', he seems determined to make King wait a little longer.

The County Ground boss said: "Nothing was decided or agreed as a result of the meeting.

"But I am firm on what is on offer. The boy knows that."

As for the other target, Chelsea's Sam Parkin looks almost certain to accept a three-month loan deal but one of King's first telephone calls this week will be to Stamford Bridge boss Claudio Ranieri.

He said: "Sam is coming into the club for further talks this week.

"He liked what he saw in Southport but I have to speak to Chelsea before a final decision can be made."

As for other targets, former Portsmouth man Stefan Miglioranzi is expected to agree a month-to-month deal this week, but King is still looking to find someone to fill the gaping hole on the left side of midfield.

He said: "That's something I'm looking at.

"With Paul McAreavey gone, it's no secret that we are short in that position."

The manager has said that Swindon-born Paul Trollope is someone who could fit the bill.

King has told the player's agent of his interest and will wait to hear from the man himself.

He will have his first chance to see a variety of 'hopefuls' in competitive action this week when Town travel to Didcot Town on Wednesday night.

Although the squad travelling to the Hellenic Premier Division side is likely to feature a number of first-team regulars, the main aim is to give several triallists the chance to impress.

Among those likely to be on show are former Manchester United keeper Nick Baxter, Leeds United full-back Chris Kamara and Nigerian striker Bimbo Fatucan Lanre.

Town are looking to recruit more stewards for the 2002-3 campaign. Further information can be obtained on 01793 333733.

Meanwhile, the club's appeal for labour and equipment goes from strength to strength.

Anyone able to offer goods or some spare time to help give the County Ground a face lift should contact John Prescott via the club.
