POLICE have labelled the actions of two men who brazenly burst into an elderly man's home and ransacked his house as "despicable".

The 77-year-old, who asked not to be named, was enjoying a leisurely Saturday afternoon at his Rosebery Street home when two men called at his front door at around 3pm.

Before he could respond the men barged in, knocking him to the floor, and demanded money.

The man admitted to being too "terrified and frightened" to put up any resistance.

One of the robbers stayed with him while the other searched the house.

Having found no money one of the men attempted to remove the pensioner's wristwatch, but when he told them it was of great sentimental value they fled empty-handed.

Swindon police central area inspector, David McMullin, said: "This sort of crime is absolutely deplorable and totally despicable. People who prey on the most vulnerable in society need to be brought before the courts.

"People have a right to feel safe in their own homes and we have a duty to protect them.

"Genuine callers are very mindful of these type of attacks, but I must reinforce the need for people answering the door to strangers to insist they produce bone fide identification.

"Genuine workmen will not mind and understand the concerns of those most vulnerable."

Agencies across Wiltshire discussed initiatives on tackling thieves who target the elderly, sometimes by posing as workmen, at an inaugural strategic board meeting at police headquarters in Devizes earlier this month.

It is hoped that by increasing awareness of crime in the community, the number of incidents can be reduced.

Police have issued a description of the Rosebery Street robbers.

The first man is described as black, aged 35, around 5ft 6ins tall, with short dark hair and wore dark clothing.

The second man is white, aged in his mid-20s, around 6ft tall with stubble. He was wearing a hat and denim jacket.

Swindon police spokeswoman, Alvina Kumar, added: "He was very shaken by the experience and we appeal to anyone with information, no matter how small, to get in touch."

Witnesses should call Swindon 528111 with information.
