SOUTH Swindon MP Julia Drown is calling for changes in the law to prevent children choking on toys found in foodstuffs.
She is backing a Bill which would ensure toys contained in foodstuffs such as chocolate eggs are in one piece rather than in small parts.
She said: "I know that many children enjoy the toys they find in chocolate eggs but these are often made from small pieces and can be dangerous if swallowed.
"The labelling that exists at the moment is often inadequate and parents need to be aware that there is a real risk of their children choking.
"I am proud to be a supporter of this Bill and will continue to press for regulation to ensure that the industry addresses this problem.
"I hope parents will be careful when giving their children these sweets."
If passed, the Bill will also specify a minimum size for the toys, in order to reduce the risk of ingestion.
