DUCHY Manor Middle School, Mere, one of five facing the axe in the review of three-tier education in south Wiltshire, is to lose six of its 11 teachers at the end of term, tomorrow.

Head teacher Tom Sleigh (58), who has been at the school for 18 years, is retiring.

He has made no secret of his disappointment and anger at Wiltshire county council plans to shut the school, which, he says is improving its standards all the time.

Head of science Justus Hattam, who has been at Duchy Manor for 22 years is taking early retirement.

Head of English and advanced skills teacher Debs Hughes is moving to Castledown School in Ludgershall, to become head of English and a member of the school's senior management.

Also moving to Castledown is head of art and Years 7 and 8 Tony Rogers, who will be head of Year 7 and in charge of personal and social health education.

And Angela Moore, Year 6 class teacher responsible for Sats, is going to St George's Primary School, Warminster.
