MEMBERS of Marlborough Local History Group toured the town when Nick Baxter gave a talk on the borough's history.
They met at the Merchant's House in High Street and went to St Mary's Church, taking in Chandlers Yard, the Town Hall, Silverless Street and The Green.
Mr Baxter spoke of the role of the burgesses in bygone days, the buildings on the town hall site through the centuries, the sheep fairs which were held on The Common and changes to St Mary's Church over the years.
He will conduct a second part of the tour on August 27, at 7pm.
The next meeting of the group will be an outing to the Victorian School at Sevington, near Chippenham, tonight. For details telephone (01672) 810738.
