Summer, such as it is in Devizes, brings the problem of bonfires.

Come the summer afternoons and evenings, when you feel the need to hang out the washing to dry and have the windows open to cool the house down, you far too often can't because of the stink of bonfires.

What's happened to consideration for neighbours I ask. If it really is necessary to light a bonfire and pollute the atmosphere? Why not do so when the wind is blowing away from neighbours' houses, or at least tell them you intend doing so to give them a chance to shut windows and gather clothes off the clothes line.

And why is it necessary to leave the fire smouldering all night?

Ultimately, why have a fire at all? Why not compost the spoils of the garden and do your bit for the environment?

Sadly Kennet District Council seems to have no teeth in this matter, with a complete absence of bylaws covering this issue, which if dealt with at all will be dealt with as an act of nuisance.

I believe a straw poll would show that we the residents of Kennet want a bylaw. So come on councillors take note and please do something about this annoying situation.
