There is a strong feeling within Calne and the surrounding villages that the now redundant Carnegie Library should be for the future use of its people.

The library was left in a trust: "For the purpose of a public library for the borough of Calne."

Owing to the construction of the new library, the building is now obsolete.

The trust dictates that the building must be sold for Best Value and the proceeds be "ring fenced" and used for the purchase of books, beyond the statutory monies given by Wiltshire County Council.

The crunch comes in open market bids. Calne Town Council would have difficulty in aiming high enough to secure the building.

If, however, those people wishing to retain the library write to their MP Michael Ancram and/or the Charity Commission, this would undoubtedly help "people power"to prevail.

The Charity Commission would also have a deeper understanding of the depth of feeling in Calne, and be made aware of the vehemence residents feel in relation to this listed building.

It is perceived to belong solely to Calne, and should only be offered to the town council.

If residents wish to retain the Carnegie Library for community use in Calne write to: The Rt Hon M Ancram MP, House of Commons, London SW1A 0AA and/or Charity Commission, Woodfield House, Taunton, Somerset, TA1 4BL.

Town and county councillors are fighting for this cause and we need help.
