I WRITE regarding the £150,000 to redirect Bradford's traffic to new areas of the town, which seems excessive and pointless.

The biggest problem is the two narrow parts of Market Street and the congestion here causing stationary traffic combined with the volume of transiting traffic.

Could I suggest that both problems could be reduced by the simpler (and far cheaper) replacement of a few road signs?

First, reduce the weight limit on the town bridge to 7.5 tonne except for emergency services, public and school transport.

This will remove large vehicles, reducing the blockages, thus improving the flow and cutting the build-up of emissions.

Secondly, change the town direction signs on the Bath road entering Bradford so that all traffic to Trowbridge is directed via Staverton.

Also, at the Stallard Street roundabout in Trowbridge, remove the direction for Bath from the Bradford sign and direct all traffic for Bath via Wingfield and Staverton.

This will not stop locals going through Bradford but will remove transients who tend to follow road signs.

I don't presume this will solve the town's traffic congestion or poor air quality completely only a bypass can do this.

But surely reducing the volume and increasing the flow has got to be better than redirecting the problem to other parts of the town and ultimately not removing any of the congestion from the town centre.
