A fundraising campaign is building up steam in a bid to get a nature centre near Trowbridge up and running next year.

The Hope Nature Centre has been planned for Southwick country Park for two years, but first volunteers must raise £250,000 for the building work and kitchen equipment needed.

Project leader, June Fleming, said: "We have done very well and lots of people have come forward to help with sponsorship but we are desperate for money for building.

"If everyone in Trowbridge gave £1 we could have it up and running in six months."

The project, which will cost over £350,000, aims to combine a visitor attraction with a workplace for people with special needs.

Mrs Fleming said: "This will benefit everyone and provide a great attraction for the town. It is a worthwhile cause.

"Many people do not realise there is nothing for young adults with special needs to do after they leave school and college."

The centre includes plans for a tea room, shop, nature trail, and a small nursery supplying plants and shrubs.

There will be plenty to attract children, including a rabbit village, a miniature railway and a play area and putting green.

The project committee hopes to provide work for about 35 to 40 young people with learning disabilities and will also employ support staff and other helpers.

The plans were approved by West Wiltshire District Council in May last year and now all that is needed is the funding.

Mrs Fleming said: "It is amazing how everyone has supported us. We have had money coming in from everywhere."

The group collected nearly £500 at the recent Spotlight on Trowbridge event and many businesses have made donations.

Churches have also got involved in the fundraising effort and the next event is to be a coffee morning at the Methodist Church at Wesley Road on Friday.
