CAMPAIGNERS determined to get another secondary school for Trowbridge were due to hold a public meeting last night.

Parents living on the east side of the town, where the Paxcroft Mead development has brought thousands more people into the town, are worried a promised secondary school to cope with the influx will never be built.

A 20-acre site in Green Lane was allocated for a school in West Wiltshire District Council's district plan in 1998 but this allocation was later removed.

Mark Russell, planning policy manager for the district council, said: "This site was allocated for a secondary school, in response to the county council's education department informing us there was a need for another school in the town.

"We have removed the allocation because the county council have resolved to expand existing schools."

No final decision will be made on what is to be done with the land until an ongoing public inquiry is completed.
