CIVIC chiefs in Highworth will try to find a solution to town centre car parking problems when they meet in September.

The town council will look at the problem of illegal parking in High Street, and parking problems in Market Square on Saturdays.

They will also look at traffic problems at the junction of St Michael's Avenue and Lechlade Road.

A highway engineer from Swindon Borough Council will attend to suggest how traffic lights could ease problems in the town.

The town council recently wrote to all High Street traders asking them to ensure vehicles were not illegally parked there.

Highworth deputy mayor, Coun Phil Beaumont, said: "Illegal parking in the High Street is irritating to say the least and people also park all day in Market Square. These are the sort of things we want to do something about.

"These things do affect people coming into the town centre. We need to have a debate as there are a number of things we could do."

Around 18 months ago the town council discussed plans for a one way system in the town centre, but the scheme was abandoned as members felt it would not help the traffic situation.
