CLOSED circuit television cameras will not be installed in Highworth because town councillors say they are unnecessary.
Councillors say the level of crime in the town does not warrant the expense.
The town has suffered from vandalism and anti-social behaviour but councillors felt CCTV would not solve the problems.
Town clerk David Lane said: "We are talking about spending £10,000 a year on running costs.
"We have a small amount of crime in Highworth and it is significantly lower than in other parts of Swindon.
"We can't put cameras everywhere in the hope of catching people causing problems.
"We do have problems at the Rec and near the secondary school but they would have to supply their own cameras as they are private as opposed to communal properties.
"However, we are always willing to reverse the decisions if conditions change."
The CCTV idea was floated by the police, who said the cameras would be linked to a central control room in Swin-don.
