ANDY KING believes a three-pronged attack is Town's best hope of success this year unless cash is forthcoming for two specialist wingers.

The County Ground boss saw his side transformed from a disjointed outfit to a fluent force after switching to a 4-3-3 formation halfway through Saturday's 6-1 thrashing of Newport Isle of Wight.

A 1-0 deficit was ruthlessly overturned as Town cantered to victory against the Dr Martens League Eastern Division outfit.

King said: "In the first half we didn't know how to play to the 4-4-2 system, and it showed.

"As well as being a good workout, the match showed me that 4-3-3 is the way to go unless I am suddenly able to acquire two quality wide players.

"I don't see Danny Invincible as a wide left player. I never have. He is a free spirit who needs to roam. It suits him to be a part of a three.

"We clearly looked more effective in the second half and played much better football.

"The switch certainly seemed to benefit Sam Parkin and I was pleased to see him get on the scoresheet.

"He did enough to convince me that he'd suit our system.

"I hope Danny and Eric will build on a goalscoring start as well."

Another big plus for King was the performance of triallist Darren Dykes.

The Buckingham Town youngster was given a second chance to impress after an initial outing at Didcot and King feels the attacking midfielder did not disgrace himself in a red shirt.

He said: "I think he did enough to warrant another look.

"The movement and ability he showed makes me believe the boy has something.

"I will be looking at him again. However I have yet to speak to him about his desire to be a professional footballer.

"I'm not sure what his circumstances and commitments are."

As for Town's 'roaming' Australian, Danny Invincible admits he is happy not to be tied down to one particular spot.

He said: "I do like to drift and move into space but whether, it's on the left, on the right or up front, I'll just work continue to work hard for the team and look to score goals wherever possible.

"But we played 4-3-3 a lot last year and had some success with it. That's probably why the gaffer is looking at it again."

Former Town keeper Richard McKinney could find himself lining up against Glenn Hoddle's Tottenham Hotspur tomorrow night.

The 23-year-old impressed between the sticks for Colchester United on Saturday and looks likely to feature for the U's against Sheringham and company in a pre-season friendly.
