The museum, which is dedicated to the history of the Great Western Railway, has put nearly all of its hidden treasures on display for the Storehouse exhibition.
And it reported a steady stream of visitors showing a big interest in the displays during the exhibition's launch at the weekend.
Mark Dodge, of the Steam Museum, said: "It has been very good, we have had a steady stream of people coming in.
"Some of them have come to see the new exhibition and for others it has been a pleasant surprise.
"We have had some good reports from people that have been round it."
The artefacts in Storehouse contain some of the most valuable and interesting items in the history of the Great Western Railway. It features everything from boiler trucks to train tickets.
Highlights include a model train based on the Saint Sebastian engine, built by railway enthusiast Fred Cottan, that took 30 years to create.
The exhibition could become permanent.
