Cash, cigarettes and a mobile phone were among the items stolen when a man broke into a taxi in front of onlookers.
The driver's window of the silver link taxi was smashed while it was parked outside the One Stop Shop at The Circle, Pinehurst. The thief even took a pair of glasses belonging to the driver, in the theft that happened at 5.35pm on Saturday night.
Bystanders described the offender as white, 5ft 10in to 6ft tall, in his early 20s, very slim build with a pale, gaunt face. He was wearing a white top and trousers and police believe he may be local to the area.
Anyone with information has been asked to contact PC Pam Byrne at Swindon Central Police Station on 528111.
